The Canadian National Pickleball League (CNPL) is committed to upholding the integrity and safety of pickleball for all players. In light of recent updates from USA Pickleball regarding paddle performance standards, we have made the decision to immediately ban the use of certain paddles that do not meet the new Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR) standards in all CNPL events and tournaments.
Reasons for Immediate Ban:
- Commitment to Standards: Unlike USA Pickleball’s phased “sunset” approach, the CNPL believes that paddles failing to meet the testing standards should be removed from play immediately. This ensures that we maintain a consistent standard throughout our competitions.
- Season Stability: The CNPL season runs from mid-May to early-October. Implementing changes mid-season could disrupt the competitive balance. By enforcing this ban right away, we avoid potential confusion and maintain a stable environment for players.
- Player Safety: Above all, the CNPL prioritizes player safety. The paddles in question have exceeded acceptable performance thresholds, potentially compromising the safety we strive to uphold. We encourage players to switch to compliant equipment that meets the new PBCoR standards.
For Affected Players:
For those using the affected paddles, we want to reassure you that the brands have either already released, or are in the process of releasing, compliant replacements. We recommend reaching out to your paddle manufacturer for options that align with the new testing criteria.
The CNPL remains dedicated to fostering a fair and competitive pickleball environment. With these actions, we aim to support the growth and integrity of the sport for many seasons to come.
